Parliamentary watchdog Ipsa is set to recommend a controversial pay rise for MPs of £7,600 to £74,000, to come in after the 2015 election.
One of the Chartists’ six demands was pay for Members of Parliament in order for working class men to be able to afford to become MPs.
We asked our visitors what they thought MPs should be paid. Answers ranged from ‘nowt’, ‘a lump of coal’, ‘a jam sandwich and half a curly wurly’ to ‘a decent amount so it isn’t just Tories’, ‘same as a doctor, local gov. officer’ and even ‘100,000’.
